ANT+ to BLE Protocol Converter

ANT to BLE Protocol Converter

ANT+ is a wireless sensor network technology, widely used by sports and fitness sensors and associated display and logging equipment.

Our Client was working with a high-end exercise bike manufacturer. They were finding that, although ANT+ is well-established in the sports & fitness sector, it is not widely supported by smartphones and other mobile devices - which customers increasingly want to use in their training programmes.
The Client had developed hardware in the form of a "dongle" supporting both ANT+ and the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) wireless technology common in smartphones, etc.

The dongle used a Nordic Semiconductor nR51422 multiprotocol System-on-Chip (SoC) to provide the ANT+ and BLE support.

Antronics Ltd developed the firmware for the ARM Cortex-M0 processor in the multiprotocol SoC.

This required reverse-engineering the exercise bike's ANT+ message format, determining a suitable format to carry the information over BLE, and then interfacing to Nordic Semiconductor's standard SoftDevice - which embodies the two radio protocol stacks.

This was successfully integrated with the mobile app developed by the Client.
